It is well known that environmental contamination is one of the main routes of transmission of the SARS COV-2 virus. There has also been a lot of misinformation about which types of transmissions are actually happening in healthcare settings.  We will be discussing the relevant routes of transmission, their implications, and how to address the challenges posed by this virus in healthcare setting.

Martin Kiernan – Clean Hospitals Education Committee member, Visiting Clinical Fellow, Richard Wells Research Centre, University of West London

The 2020 COVID-19 outbreak modelling demonstrated a potentially catastrophic effect on the National Health Service in the UK with predicted numbers potentially far outstripping the bed availability. This presentation will discuss the challenges in setting up a 4000 bedded intensive care unit in a conference centre with limited facilities. Practical aspects of safe hand hygiene when there is limited water, environmental hygiene and the need for continual refinement of processes will be discussed.
